"We are Iranian first — Kurdish second." That's not a slogan from a studio. It's what people from Iran's border provinces say themselves. They ask: why do you call us "the Kurds"? We are Iranians first, then Kurds. Iranians first, then Arabs. Iranians first, then Baluch. The fantasy of a fragmented Iran is not coming from inside Iran. Separatist groups exist — but they remain a small minority in every one of those regions. If their voice is louder today, it is because four decades of oppression fell hardest on Kurdistan, Baluchistan, Khuzestan and beyond. The overwhelming majority, once free to speak, shout the name of Iran. Overlapping identities do not divide a nation. Tyranny does.
