"In the best, most dreamlike scenario, we go back to where we were six months ago."
Iraj Mesdaghi lays out the arithmetic of negotiation in one line:
Assume everything goes perfectly — sanctions lifted, two million barrels a day flowing. The reward? A return to the exact conditions of six months ago.
Was the economy healthy six months ago? Were the wheels turning? Had the dysfunction disappeared?
If the regime could have done something with that money, it would never have ended up here in the first place.
Pakistanis are working the file. Qataris are working it. Omanis are working it. The regime's reformists and Pezeshkian are working it.
And at the end of it all: a dead end.
You cannot open a road where there is no road. This is a blind alley — you drive to the end and hit the wall.
