A poem written a century ago — yet it reads like it was written this morning.
Iraj Mirza, writing in the Qajar era:
"Every promise they gave us was thin air.
Every point they made was wrong and false.
They handed the shepherding of this flock to wolves —
since when was that the rule?
The thieves sat down to plunder this table;
all of it came from our own negligence.
They ate, broke, tore and shook everything loose…
They said 'we are this, we are that' — alas,
it was all a lullaby to put us to sleep.
Would that our pot had not been left open,
or that the cat had a little shame."
The punchline of this clip: the Islamic Republic is Qajar in new robes. A 21st-century state whose mind is trapped in a structure the world settled 200 years ago — and the West 400–500 years ago: religion belongs outside of government.
Share this with someone who still believes the promises are new.
