"If he stays home and alive, he's a burden. If we get him killed, he's a golden martyr."
Iraj Mesdaghi lays out the cold arithmetic used against political activists inside Iran between 1984 and 1988.
A just-released political prisoner — or an activist who had lost contact — would be "reconnected" by a single phone call. A phone line with one end sitting on a Ministry of Intelligence desk, being recorded.
The outcome was rigged either way:
▪️ Slip through and leave the country → a fresh recruit
▪️ Get caught → execution or death in a shootout → a martyrdom file
Both results served the leadership. The justification? These people are "a suffocating weight on the heroic masses."
Stay alive and quiet, and you're a traitor. Get killed, and you're an honor. That logic consumed a generation.
