Three weeks apart. Two opposite fatwas. Same Quran. Three weeks ago, from the Friday prayer pulpit, Ahmad Khatami recited the verse "And if they incline toward peace, then incline to it" — concluding that if the enemy asks for talks, Muslims are religiously OBLIGED to negotiate. This week, same pulpit, different verse: negotiating with America is forbidden. That is not a slip. It is the operating system: "The Quran is under their feet, the Nahj al-Balagha is in their pocket, the Prophet visits their dreams nightly, and they dig up sayings of Jesus on demand — they manufacture whatever they need." The deeper point: much of the "hardline" noise is performed hardliners, not real ones. Performative radicalism is a bargaining chip — until retreat is imposed from above, and the very same scripture flips meaning. That is the Islamic Republic's Achilles heel: a system that borrows authority from a sacred text while bending the text to the needs of the week. Save this clip. Compare it to the next fatwa.
