"We don't know what fool ends up as president." Those aren't my words — that's Ayatollah Montazeri, verbatim, during the Constitutional Assembly debate on presidential powers: "We don't know which donkey the people will send up onto the roof — and then you can't get him down." That single line exposes everything: ▪️ In the US, public opinion decides the fate of governments — so pressure there counts double. ▪️ In the Islamic Republic, they never intended to ask anyone's vote. And when they do stage a vote, they engineer it so people say: "I'm voting for this fool out of fear of that fool." In Iran it makes no difference who gets pushed up onto the roof.
