Why did Saddam dare to invade Iran in 1980?
The 1975 Algiers Agreement proved that no regional power could challenge Iran’s formidable armed forces. Yet, within five years, the post-1979 regime systematically gutted the military—executing top generals and elite pilots, cancelling critical defense contracts, and shattering military discipline.
That catastrophic loss of deterrence directly triggered the eight-year war. Today, the regime has swung to the opposite extreme: blinded by delusions of power and reckless regional overreach, they are once again steering Iran toward potential devastation.
