He controlled Iran's state broadcaster for 10 years with over 100 channels—yet now claims he wished there was a platform for free speech.
Ezzatollah Zarghami recently expressed regret that post-revolution Iran lacked an open forum like Hosseiniyeh Ershad for diverse ideas to be heard freely and safely. But the facts expose this blatant hypocrisy.
From 2004 to 2014, Zarghami served as the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), commanding an absolute media monopoly with dozens of TV and radio networks. If he truly valued diverse thought, why didn't he permit even one single channel to feature independent or opposing voices?
Feigning support for free expression after presiding over a decade of relentless censorship is an insult to the public's memory. The people see through these hollow claims, and history cannot be rewritten with theatrical remorse.
What do you think? Can state officials rewrite years of enforced censorship with sudden calls for free debate? Share your thoughts below.
