"They turned Iran into someone else's bargaining chip." One of the deepest wounds inflicted on Iran is this: a country that once set the agenda is now a card played by others. Compare it to the 1970s: ▪️ In OPEC, Iran was the decisive power ▪️ In the region's military balance, Iran ▪️ In the region's economy, Iran When Arab states launched the 1973 oil embargo, Iran's answer was: "We will not embargo oil." That is what it looks like to make your own decisions. At the same time Iran maintained ties with Arab capitals, with Washington, with London — while Iranian newspapers led with the occupation of Jerusalem in 1967. Relations with everyone, but national interest at the center. Today even the name of the Persian Gulf has become negotiable. The issue was never ideology. It is whether national interest comes first.
