"The fatwa says the bomb is forbidden" — I answered that claim on the spot, at Brookings. Twelve or thirteen years ago, at a Brookings Institution panel, a senior U.S. State Department official from the Obama era said with confidence: the Supreme Leader has declared building the bomb religiously forbidden, and since fatwas matter in Iran, we're sure they won't build it. My reply, right there: That Supreme Leader had a higher leader before him — Khomeini — who issued a fatwa saying that lying is permitted to preserve the regime. One sentence is enough. The very statement you're citing as a guarantee could itself be a lie. And here's the real point: that American official wasn't naive. Anyone who accepts "a fatwa exists, therefore no bomb" isn't misinformed — they're choosing self-deception. The West often wasn't fooled in these talks. It preferred to be fooled. What's your take? Tell me in the comments. منبع / Source: https://youtu.be/aObjOkljuic?t=1690
