A mathnavi-style poem was circulated and regime loyalists insisted it was written by Ali Khamenei himself — a poem about his longing for "martyrdom": spending Nowruz "beside the king of the good, with comrades, martyrs and strangers." Everyone assumed it was written after his death and attributed to him. So nobody paid attention. Until someone took the first letter of every line and read them in order: "I, Ali Khamenei, am born of Satan." The acrostic was the whole point. State news agencies quietly deleted the poem — after the Friday prayer leader of Ahvaz had already recited it from the pulpit.
