When the speaker feels no shame, the audience has to feel it for him. That's vicarious shame. A state historian — same age bracket as Trump, claiming scholarship and erudition — goes on regime television to talk, at length and with relish, about "adult diapers." To what end? Nobody knows. Even if an 80-year-old man needed diapers, where exactly is the scandal? The scandal is inventing it, attributing it to someone falsely, and then insisting "my source is solid, it's from Western media." The punchline: he drags in White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt — and can't even pronounce her name, calling her "Karoline Lat." All this noise isn't history or journalism. It's the sound of a deep wound Trump left on the Islamic Republic and its allies. And the regime's court historian has become exactly what he mocks: the man changing the diapers of the system's historical failures. Agree? Disagree?
