Unlike Turkey, Egypt, or Pakistan—where armed forces historically operated with institutional autonomy from political ideologues—Iran’s military apparatus is entirely fused with the ruling clerical ideology. They are not merely enforcers of the state; they are its central pillar, chief architects, and principal financial beneficiaries. A military coup requires institutional divergence between the gun and the regime. In the Islamic Republic, that separation does not exist. Expecting the very guardians and beneficiaries of the system to stage a coup against themselves represents a fundamental misunderstanding of Iranian political reality.
