Layer Four: Tongue and Blood

Layer four. Today's Iranian is not a race. The first three layers are behind us: Zagros farmer, steppe rider, plateau weave. This episode is not about time. It is a map. One where language draws one shape and blood draws another, and the two do not coincide. The Iranic language family spread from the Black Sea to Tang China. Sogdian merchants carried their dialect east as the working tongue of the Silk Road. But the plateau lineage stayed compact. Tongue travelled. Blood did not (Sims-Williams, 2007; Lazaridis et al., 2016). The reverse is also true. Along the Caucasus and the plateau's southwestern margin, the lineage stayed and the language shifted to Turkic or Arabic. The Ossetians still speak an Iranic dialect, heir to Scythian, but the genome reads largely Caucasian. Scythian itself is gone, except where it became the rivers: *Don, Dnieper, Dniester* all carry the Scythian word for river. In the middle, where language and blood travelled together, sit the Kurd, the Tajik, the Pashtun. Modern Tajiks show genetic continuity with Iron Age southern Central Asia (Guarino-Vignon et al., 2022). Among Afghan Pashtuns, Y-haplogroup R1a1a-M17 appears at very high frequency (Di Cristofaro et al., 2013). Three living branches of one family. "Iranian" means a language family that ran from the Black Sea to China, a plateau that stayed where it always was, and the gap between them where we live. Not race. Not purity. Homeland.
