Layer Three. Today’s Iranian is not a race. It is a layering. The first layer was the Zagros farmer. The second was the Yamnaya rider. This episode is layer three: the plateau. Ancient-DNA work on 23 mitogenomes and 13 nuclear genomes from 9 archaeological sites in the northern plateau shows striking population stability from the Copper Age through the Sassanid Empire, a span of roughly three thousand years. Maternal lineages cluster on H, J, U, T, and HV. Paternal lines run on J1 and J2 with deep roots. Small Bronze-Age inflows from South-Central Asia, Anatolia, and the Levant are visible, but none large enough to break the continuity (Amjadi et al., 2025). Into that settled population, around 520 BCE, Darius commissioned the Behistun inscription in three languages: Old Persian, Elamite, Akkadian. That text is where Pārsa and the rule of Aryānām, the land of the Iranians, first enter a state document. Cyrus before him, in the Babylon Cylinder of 539 BCE, set the multi-ethnic governance philosophy into clay. The Apadana relief at Persepolis shows delegations from twenty-three satrapies bringing tribute. The empire carved its own diversity into its wall. This was not a nation in the modern sense. It was a deliberate multi-ethnic project, run day to day on Elamite clay tablets at Susa and Persepolis. The Achaemenid project itself was an Iranian-Elamite-Babylonian-Median weave. Cyrus was Median on his mother’s side, Persian on his father’s. His chancery wrote in Elamite. Greek, Lydian, and Egyptian craftsmen built the Apadana. The plurality was not the weakness. It was the structure. The genes had already settled. What was new in this era was the name. The inscription stayed in the mountain.
