"Why should I go without, so that you can feast?"
One sentence that sums up Iran's collapse of public trust.
There was a time when a leader asked people to consume less sugar — and consumption actually dropped that same day. People saw themselves standing beside the state.
Today, every call for "austerity" triggers the same mental checklist:
▪️ A cleric preaches thrift while his sons and sons-in-law feed at the trough
▪️ An official urges "buy Iranian" while his own family imports baby goods from abroad
▪️ Another advises sacrifice — and the public does the math on his own record
The population was less than half of what it is now, but trust was many times greater.
When words and deeds don't match, sympathy dies. That's not stubbornness from the people — it's the arithmetic of two decades of hypocrisy.
Which example damaged public trust the most? Tell us in the comments.
