"We have no way out but to bring Zahhak down." In a single line of Persian verse, Iraj Mesdaghi unpacks the compressed history of Iran: the Kaviani banner → Kaveh the Cup of Jamshid → Jamshid and standing against them: Zahhak, the tyrant. Fereydun, Zahhak, Kaveh, Jamshid — all in one couplet. They call it the little Shahnameh: the whole of Iranian history in miniature. The conclusion is unflinching: if we are the children of Ferdowsi and Hafez, if we descend from Kaveh and Fereydun, then our duty toward the Zahhak of our own age is not ambiguous — nor toward his propagandists, who appear in many costumes.
